School is a Wast of Time – Beth Campbell Duke
(No, that’s not a typo. You’ll have to attend Beth’s talk to find out why.)
If you’ve talked to a teenager lately, you will know that there is a battle going on within our education system.
In one corner, people are embracing technology, using it to stretch the boundaries of learning and overcome obstacles in unique ways. In the other corner, technology is being locked out of the classrooms and students are being denied access to social media – and are not being taught the skills to use it effectively, safely and responsibly.
Beth Campbell Duke thinks that adults and educators have a responsibility to understand technology – and its implications – and to lead our youth by example.
And she should know: Beth was a high school teacher and she recently launched a youth engagement program for high school educators. I’ll bet you can remember a few teachers who would have benefited from this training!
Social media, like basic literacy, is a game-changer only as long as you have the skills to use it. But who is teaching these skills to our youth?
Beth wants for no high school student to think that “school is a wast of time”. Hear hear!

School is a Wast of Time
Prior to becoming self-employed a few years ago, Beth taught high school – finishing her formal teaching career working with colleagues in the redesign of a ‘Career and Academic Readiness’ program geared towards helping ‘at-risk’ youth better navigate the transition to high school by focusing on their strengths.
Since leaving formal teaching, Beth has been learning how to figure out and integrate social media into more traditional personal marketing programs. She has recently launched ‘Werd OUT’ a youth engagement and empowerment program available to high school educators.
